Today, some 600 bison populate the island, along with an abundance of mule deer, pronghorn antelope (from which the island gets its name), bighorn sheep, and other mammals. The island has been used as a prison, a motion picture setting, and for sheep and horse ranching. The island is a Utah state park, with rocks, some of the oldest found in the U.S., dating from the Pre-Cambrian Era. Antelope Island is in the Great Salt Lake, which is one of Utah's most famous and prominent natural features.
